Trails at Newcastle is pleased to announce the recent addition of Brenda Nunes, LEED AP, of Bellevue, as Community Developer, to their management team. Nunes brings over 16 years of marketing and community relations expertise on the Eastside to the project and will be responsible for facilitating community development for the project.

Apple PT Welcomes New Therapists  Apple Physical Therapy is pleased to welcome physical therapist Jeremiah Ferguson, DPT and massage therapist Christina Nguyen, LMP. Jeremiah earned his Doctorate in PT from the University of Puget Sound and Christina graduated from Cortiva Massage School. Patrick Dempsey Racing Joins Team Seattle - Actor and professional racer Patrick Dempsey is joining the Chamber Member Team Seattle at Le Mans. Dempsey, along with his business and racing partner Joe Foster, will share duties with Don Kitch Jr., to complete the three driver team for the Le Mans race. Dempsey says “I am honored to accept the opportunity to help Team Seattle and enhance the efforts to fund the infant heart program at Seattle Children’s Hospital.”  For more information about the race, visit www.teamseattle.com!

Tony Ventrella was the lunch speaker at the Golf Club at Newcastle on April 8th.  About 50 people attended the lunch.
      

Mack Strong at the Chamber Luncheon - It was a full house at Tapatio's on June 10th.  Mack Strong (Newcastle resident and former Seahawk) gave an inspirational speech about the work he does to encourage children in Leadership/Sports Camps.  His WINning message:  Work hard, Invest in people, and Never quit! YMCA and Sweet Decadence Open House on June 2nd - Attendees learned more about the new Coal Creek YMCA while enjoying wine & chocolates!  Everyone had fun and the YMCA signed up a few new members. (click on photos to enlarge)

        
             
                           

Candidates for King County Executive visit Newcastle The next King County Executive will have visited Newcastle at least twice. The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum is scheduled for October 17th 2009 and will feature the Executive race, King County Sherriff race and 9th District King County Council seat. To help candidates learn more about Newcastle and help Newcastle learn more about them the Chamber is hosting "fireside chat" style briefings for each candidate. Chamber Chairman Nick Sooy, City Manager John Starbard and YMCA Eastside Executive Marcia Isenberger brief the candidates on the projects in and people of Newcastle. King County Council Members Larry Phillips and Dow Constantine enjoyed chocolates at Sweet Decadence before hour long conversations with community leaders and residents.
                     
                      

May 18th Happy Hour for Veterans The Golf Club at Newcastle hosted a wonderful event to honor veterans for their service to our country. Every branch of the service was represented. Veterans were treated to a drink and appetizer by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and sponsoring businesses. 61 people came to honor more than 20 veterans. Attendees came from all over the Eastside but Russ from right here at Regency Newcastle was one of the favorites. Russ was a tail gunner on a B-26 bomber served in Europe during WW2 and celebrated his 85th birthday at the event.

Katherine Boles (NCC John L. Scott) spoke to the crowd about her 10 years in the Washington National Guard. Don Leingang, Executive Director for the USO also spoke in appreciation of veterans and explained how the USO supports our service men and women everyday. The USO held a Golf Tournament and dinner the next day at The Golf Club at Newcastle. Former Seahawk (and Air Force) Bryce Fisher spent the day with the soldiers on the course and spoke to the group at dinner. Active duty personnel were sponsored for their day on the links at Newcastle.

In addition to The Golf Club at Newcastle thanks goes to Doug Kunkel from CCUD, Rob Sargent of The Press, James Glen and Jonette McGrew from John L Scott, and John and Lisa Jensen for their time and energy to support the event.

Candidate Forum  - The Forum at the Golf Club on Jan. 17th was attended by about 60 people including all six candidates for the Elected Elections Director position. Moderators Jim Vesely and Debbie Berto from the Seattle Times and Issaquah press made for a lively exchange. This will be the first "All Mail" ballot. There will be no primary so all six candidates will appear on the ballot. The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, The Municipal League and the Golf Club at Newcastle partnered to put on this free event for the community.

Candidate Forum - The Chamber partnered with the Municipal League and The Golf Club at Newcastle to hold it's 4th Annual Candidate Forum on Saturday October 18th.  Approximately 100 people attended to hear candidates for the 41st District, the 8th Congressional District and pro and con speakers on I-26 and I-1000. 

Boy Scout Troop 499 is collecting Ink Cartridges.  Donate your empty brand name cartridges to the Boy Scouts for their recycling and fundraising program. You can drop your cartridges off in the collection box located at HomeStreet Bank. Every cartridge makes a difference so please participate! Coal Creek YMCA Under Construction! (click on pictures to enlarge)
YMCA of Greater Seattle broke ground on Tuesday, September 9th,on the Coal Creek YMCA in Newcastle. The new 49,000-square-foot YMCA, anticipated to open in fall 2009, will have a fully accessible swimming pool, teaching kitchen, teen center, community meeting space and health and wellness facilities for all ages, interests and abilities. More than 100 people attended the groundbreaking celebration. The YMCA wishes to thank its many volunteers and contributors which include GLY Construction, Bank of America, The Gates Foundation, PACCAR and many others.  See a copy of the floor plan here.

Team Seattle and HomeStreet Bank are Racing for Children!
The team kicked off it's 2008 season with a luncheon at Children's Hospital on October 19th.  HomeStreet Bank will be sponsoring again this year.  2008 marks Team Seattle's final year at Daytona.  The team has raised $2.7 Million dollars so far, with a goal of bringing home another $700,000 in January 2008.  There are rumors of Le Mans in 2009!  For more information go to:  www.teamseattle.com

It was a full house at the Candidate Forum!  Thanks to The Golf Club at Newcastle, Boy Scout Troop 499, volunteers and our moderator Connie Marshall for making this a great event!  All candidates were there on Oct. 21st:  41st Legislative District House of Representatives position #1 Fred Jarrett (R); Dale Murphy (D); and position #2 Judith Clibborn (D) and Erik Fretheim (R) and  8th congressional District Congressman Dave Reichert (R) and Darcy Burner (D).  You may have seen our banner on KIRO 7 news, or the The Seattle Times article by Jonathan Martin on Sunday Oct. 22nd.

Wine Tasting in Newcastle!  Chamber businesses teamed with local wineries to bring you a series of tastings this summer.  The last tasting was held on July 22nd at Tapatios and featured Christophe Hedges from Hedges Winery. The Golf Club at Newcastle Garners National Attention
The Golf Club at Newcastle was recently recognized for excellence in three national publications:  It ranked number 11 in Golf for Women's all-new ranking of the 50 best public and resort courses for womenit was selected by Business 2.0. as one of the 6 best golf courses within 30 minutes of a major U. S. city; and was included in Golf Magazine's July travel feature article, "Seattle where the Golf is as good as the Cofee."

October 5th - Lunch meeting recap:  31 people attended our October meeting and heard several speakers, including David Irons, King County Councilmember.  Rob Sargent of The Press gave ideas for well-designed business cards, and Debbie Berto, Publisher of Issaquah Press spoke about the importance of an advertising plan.

September 7th - Lunch meeting recap:  40 people enjoyed lunch at Tapatio's and heard from King County Councilmember Steve Hammond, Newcastle City Council Candidates Dan Hubbell and Steve Buri, and representatives from WS DOT.  Mr. Kim Henry and Mr. John Donatelli (pictured in photo) gave an informative presentation on current and planned I-405 projects.

August 19th & 26th - Meet Your Elected Officials! - We had 31 people at each of the 2 breakfasts.  Sheriff Sue Rahr and King County Councilmember  Reagan Dunn were our speakers on 8/19.  Representatives Judy Clibborn and Fred Jarret spoke on 8/26.

August 3rd meeting recap:  41 people attended our lunch meeting at The Golf Club at Newcastle.  Michael Pearce and John Starbard gave a summary of the Economic Development Strategic Plan which was approved by City Council on 8/2/05.  A published copy of the plan will available for members within a few weeks.

July 6th meeting recap:  31 people attended and shared there ideas about retirement.  Bill Burris, Jeffrey Lorsch and Paul Gilfry spoke about some of the key issues to consider when planning for retirement and the care of aging relatives.  We also heard a few personal examples of how important it is to plan for decisions before a crisis occurs. 

June 1st meeting recap - We had 40 members attend, including the Newcastle City Manager and 5 City Councilmembers.  Julie Varon of ANewCastle4U and  Courtney Brown, from the City of Newcastle talked about the exciting events planned for Newcastle this summer.  There are still sponsorship opportunities available for Newcastle Days.  Contact Courtney Brown at 425-454-6162, or visit the City's website: www.ci.newcastle.wa.us.  Bill Burris presented thank-you gifts to the members that sponsored camp scholarships.  We were all entertained as members described the TV characters that they identified with or admired most!

May 4th meeting recap
:  We had 32 members attend, including the Newcastle City Manager, 3 City Councilmembers and King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn.  Thanks to the generosity of Tapatio's, we're now holding our lunch meetings in the main part of the restaurant! Nick Sooy of Farmers Insurance and  Linda Stemler of HomeStreet Bank were our guest speakers.  Both talked about how they differentiate their businesses from competitors by offering more personalized services to their customers.  We also heard many creative ideas as everyone described their "dream jobs" as part of their introductions!

April 6th meeting recap
:  This was our largest meeting so far, with 43 members and guests attending!  Thanks to the generosity and organization of everyone at Tapatio's, we held the meeting in the main part of the restaurant.  Mayor Dulcich, Scott Sadler and Bill Ptacek talked about the exciting "momentum" in Newcastle: our growing Chamber of Commerce, new funding for Coal Creek Parkway, a new Library, a Sound Transit station, and the possibility of a new YMCA facility!

March 2nd meeting recap:  23 people attended, including 3 Newcastle City Councilmen and King County Councilman Reagan Dunn.  Prizes were given for the most creative description of each attendee's "best customer".  We heard from 2 guest speakers, and introduced a promotion that Thai Castle is offering to Chamber Members this month (see Thai Castle news above).   Dennis Yarnell of Newcastle Shell talked about the role of Auto "Technicians" and the service his business provides to the community.  Barney Nelson of Massage Envy (www.massageenvy.com) described the benefits of his membership-based therapeutic massage franchise business.  Both speakers answered a variety of questions from attendees.

In February, Newcastle Police Chief Shawn Ledford informed everyone of the Police Department's new "Business E-lert" service to inform the business community of criminal activity.  One of the goals for the Newcastle Police Department in 2005 is to improve service and communication to the business community in Newcastle.  If you would like additional information, or have comments or suggestions on how the Newcastle Police Department can better serve you, please contact:  shawn.ledford@metrokc.gov or 425-649-4444.
